DAAD supports German Studies in India and Sri Lanka

Aligned with DAAD’s commitment to supporting German Studies at higher education institutions in India and south Asia, a series of workshops were organised in collaboration with DAAD Bonn, DAAD India and Goethe-Institut India from 8 – 14 August 2024 in Mumbai and Delhi.

The main objective of these workshops was to offer promising future prospects for German teacher training at universities in India and Sri Lanka. The first workshop was a three-day training course on Dhoch3 (online module 9) for German teachers followed by a two-day exploratory workshop on qualification frameworks for German teacher training in India.

Dhoch3 Workshop: From 8 – 10 August, more than 30 professors and teachers of German Studies from 20 institutions all over India and Sri Lanka came together at IIT Bombay for a ‘Dhoch3 workshop’ on Module 9 “Regional and Cultural Studies in German as Foreign Studies”. The Deputy Consul General in Mumbai, Christoph Rendtorff welcomed the participants with encouraging words.

The workshop offered an opportunity to educators teaching ‘German as Foreign Language (GFL)’ to gain valuable resources in innovative teaching and practical know-how. Besides hands-on training imparted by experts from Germany the workshop enabled networking and exchange of ideas with the fellow participants. The workshop was a part of the Dhoch3 programme of DAAD which supports the education of future teachers of German at higher education institutions abroad with online study modules and an online learning platform.

DAAD-GI Exploratory Workshop: A joint initiative by the DAAD India and the Goethe-Institut India brought together Indian and German partner universities for a pilot project aimed at establishing qualification standards of German teacher training at Indian universities.

The workshop took place in New Delhi from 12 -13 August 2024 with deliberations and discussions by a team of experts on creating a sustainable training framework and qualification for teaching of ‘German as Foreign language (GFL)’ at Indian universities. During the workshop, emphasis was given on methodology and didactic training of teaching staff as well of the students of German Studies in India based on DHOCH3 modules and DLL (Deutsch Lehren Lernen). DLL is a programme offered by GI-Institut which supports advanced training and professional development of teachers for ‘German as a Foreign Language’.

Both the workshops concluded with overwhelming positive feedback and engagement by the participants. They appreciated the practical nature of the workshop which provided concrete insights and strategies for enhancing German Studies in the region. The opportunity to interact with peers and experts was particularly valued, fostering valuable exchanges of ideas and experiences.
