Research Grants in Germany for PhD Scholars

DAAD's Research Grants allow you to carry out your research in Germany when you are registered for the degree outside of Germany - it can be your home country or any other.

About the Scholarship Programme

What are DAAD Research Grants?

The DAAD Research Grants offer funding to scholars who are registered for a PhD outside Germany but want to carry out a part of their research in Germany under the guidance of a German guide. The programme also supports early postdocs for 2 to 6 months.

Do I need to find an academic host/supervisor for myself in Germany?

Yes, you need to identify a professor at the German university who is willing to host you in her/his department for the duration of your research. You can find them through the faculty at your university or friends/seniors or even through the publications that you might be referring to. Consider this as your contribution towards your German research phase!

Will I get the doctoral degree from my home university or the German university?

You will get your doctoral degree i.e. PhD from the university at which you are already registered. After your research in Germany, you come back, consolidate your research, and submit your PhD thesis to the home institution. They will evaluate it and award you a PhD.
