The event, organised by the Centre for International Affairs, German Studies Section of the Department of Modern Language and the University Library of the University of Kelaniya with the support of the Goethe-Institut Sri Lanka, took place at the university premises on the 28th and 29th of January 2025.

As part of the celebrations, the DAAD Sri Lanka engaged with students and faculty members through an information stall on study and research opportunities in Germany. It provided valuable insights into application processes and scholarship programs available to Sri Lankan students aspiring to pursue higher education in Germany. More than 300 school students also attended this event and gained valuable insights regarding Bachelors studies in Germany.

A Cultural Show took place on 29th January 2025 from 2 – 5 pm at the University premises. It featured German music, dance and drama, offering participants a glimpse into German language and culture. Senior Professor Neelakshi C. Premawardhena, Director of the Centre for International Affairs commenced the proceedings with the welcome address followed by an insightful address by Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya. The audience was addressed by other esteemed guests who also highlighted the importance of the German language in today’s world. DAAD alumni were also invited to witness and participate in this vibrant cultural show.

DAAD Sri Lanka also delivered a few words focusing on the importance of the German language and the vast opportunities available for higher studies in Germany, highlighting the growing global significance of German proficiency in academics and career advancement, inspiring many students to consider learning the language and pursuing studies in Germany. It expressed delight at being part of the celebrations, stating, “German is the language of innovation and intellectual achievement spoken by over 100 million people as their native tongue. Learning German provides direct access to a vast array of literature, philosophy and scientific discoveries that have shaped the modern world. In fact, a significant portion of the world’s academic and scientific publications are written in German, making it a valuable language for researchers, academics, and professionals”.

The University of Kelaniya’s German Days celebrations served as a testament to the growing interest in German culture and education among Sri Lankan students.
